TIME FOR ILHAN (2018)
In 2016, Chris Newberry teamed up with filmmaker Norah Shapiro (producer on the Wetterling project and a longtime collaborator) to take on another inspiring refugee story – that of Minnesota's Ilhan Omar, who fled Somalia as a child and is now on her way to becoming the first Somali American to serve in the U.S. Congress.
A true underdog story, Time for Ilhan follows Omar as she seeks to unseat a 43-year incumbent at the Minnesota statehouse in 2016, only to find herself transform into a historic, symbolic figure on the international stage. The film was produced and directed by Shapiro, and Newberry served as producer and cinematographer.
Time for Ilhan debuted at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival and has subsequently enjoyed tremendous success, winning several film festival awards and airing nationally on the Fuse television network this past September.
But don't worry if you missed it! There will be plenty of opportunities to catch Time for Ilhan in 2019 on several platforms. So stay tuned!
(Time for Ilhan was produced by our partner company Flying Pieces Productions.)
